Yay, more gift art! This is an early b-day gift for , who turns 17 in 6 days, I believe. (which makes him about 4 days older than me O_O I actually thought I was the older one all this time. XD ) He has a very impressive gallery with some really detailed drawings, so be sure to give it a look! This was sketched last week (Kubata got a sneek peek on MSN ) , but I didn't have time to color it at first because of visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and all that. I was originally going to draw Toby here with a city background heading to school because of his recent talks about his trip here (which explains why he's wearing a backpack ), but I really didn't like how it was turning out; so I decided to change it a bit and make this a group picture instead. The background is just experimentation with some filters.
^Wall o' text!
Basically, this is a "gathering" of Tobias and two other friends of his, Nishi and Kazzi, and they decided to do a little shopping for the new year. Perhaps they should find a mini-fridge to make snowballs for later? (Yes, there are humans in the background, but try to go along with it, okay...? X_X;; ) A guy with a camera comes up to them and offers to take a picture, but poor ol' Nishi didn't have enough time to try out his new Santa suit; aww, and Toby makes a playful pose. XD (Well, the cameraman could technically be me since I drew this and all, but whatever )
Edit: Background picture changed to a more Christmassy feel. Thanks to Toby for taking the picture.

Aww-haha! I love it. X3 I usually only wear about one glove (One hand for germaphobia and the other to tough a glove-resistant NishiPod), and I love the stylish Santa hat too! You so properly conveyed my stylish essence of the season here, bravo! And I love my eyes, you actually got all the colors in them! No one ever gets that completely or include both sets of colors (Or perhaps I don't notice it often), much of an honor that you did. What a sweet heart! ...But I think if I'm going to dress like Santa, I better cover my belly (Even if it's 1/8 the size of his,) I don't want to scare off the kids.
And Toby looks great too (I swear, I even drew him a few times today... you do a much much much much much mu-mu-mu-mu-muuuuch better job drawing him than I do. X3 His cute little backpack and playful expression are great! Much more photogenic than I. :3 Kazzi looks adorable too! Bright green eyes, a friendly smile (I never get anthro snouts right, you're much more skilled than I am ), and a pretty necklace to brighten up our journey! Such a cute character too, well designed.
The photo looks pretty, I like the alteration and effects. :3 Even if people are in it with us, it's just fine. Variety and diversity is a beautiful thing! Besides, I usually end up travelling to the mall alone, so it's nice having other to hang out with, whether human or anthro, I'm sure good times will ensue. You'll have to come with us too! Thank you for including me!
Meep, sorry for taking so long to reply here, I'm having a pretty busy week (right now I've one hour break before I got to go to drawing class, so I kind of rushed with lunch so I have some time to spare) I think my favourite part here is how you drew and shaded Kazzi's face, it looks very good, and like you spend a good share of time just getting it right. The way the eyes are shaped and coloured looks just right - with the little blue shadow on the inside, which adds a great deal of depth, as well as the sparkly pupils - the green looks really vivid and natural. The same goes for the overall shading of her face - very smooth, and looking like you got it just right. Her markings are fine too, at least from what I can tell off the top of my head ^-^
Anyhow, it's a very nice drawing - especially with the colouring and the shading you've come a very long way, and the lines look a lot less shaky than I remember them. Her fur on her tail looks a little shaggy, mainly because of the straight lines there - this is one thing where one has to be extra careful, to make it look all natural, and not like someone certain's having a bad-hair day. You can have a look at [link] - now I admit that this effect is a lot easier to achieve with tablets (and more natural too - tablets are between $70 and $200 for Wacom's, but you can sometimes buy them a lot cheaper if you buy them used, or if it was a display unit - that's their only disadvantage though, they save you a lot of time, feel very natural and are easy to handle - kind of like holding a pencil in your hands) - you can do it with the mouse, but it'd take time, though you got some very smooth and round lines on Kazzi's eyes, for example. The colouring and shading is all nice though, so I say your main emphasis should be placed on lineart, since you get the colouring done so well already.
Tobias looks pretty too - I like how you drew the spots on his back - again, the colouring and everything works really well - the edges here are what look a bit unnatural. Also, one thing you can see on him are the line weights - on some places, it will look a lot more natural if you vary them - for example, the white part of his fur looks a bit "detached" from him, as if it were something he was wearing, you know what I mean? If the lines there were thinner, with little shading on his brown fur on his chest, it might look less detached, but you'd need to try that out ;3 On Kazzi you did that very well already - her muzzle has a thicker line on out left where it's farther away from the rest of her face, and you did the same on the bottom of her face as well. His backbag looks realistic in terms of shape and foreshortening, so kudos for getting that right, it usually takes quite some time and determination to not make it look off somehow, and you got it just right On the shoulder straps, the inner line could be all thin to make it look more natural (or try removing it alltogether and make the side-part of the straps on the right darker, without having a line separate it, that should took really nice, but be careful not to make it too thick either, otherwise it looks like it'd be some huge and thick fabric, though most shoulder straps on the backbags are actually really thin and light. Just saying - having them too thick makes them look heavier than they are).
Hehe, for sooome reason I can't help but think Nishi looks a little vain, having his one hand on the back of his Santa hat, and holding the white fuzz-ball with his other one X3 He's drawing all nicely though, just his torso is a little flat, maybe give a little emphasis to his chest (you could look at yourself in the mirror in the bathroom or such, when you're not wearing a shirt, you'll notice that it actually looks anything but flat - you'd have a chest, where it comes out a little, then your torso would get thinner again, and would get thicker again towards your belly). [link] would be a picture for that - sometimes it helps using circles as references, like I did in the picture and then just connect the lines. When drawing cartoon-y, the proportions would change, but most features of the body would still be hinted, at least. What helps a lot is drawing people, or self-portraits with a mirror (you could choose a fast medium such as charchoal for that, where you can just use chamois and erase things again real quick if something doesn't look right). Believe me, circles and praticing from real-life references helps a lot to get anatomy and shapes look just right.
Apart from that though, he looks all fine - the pants and the shoes look natural, and he's coloured and shaded as well as everyone else is - keep up the good work!
Heheh, I just remembered that I have one of those round, rotatable mirrors lying somewhere around the house; I can't believe I forgot about it! XD (It felt really awkward drawing while standing. O.o; ) *goes to find it* There we go.
The fur that you showed looks very pretty too. I'll give it a try next time. I just browsed around some sites for tablets, and they were indeed expensive. Maybe I'll get one in a couple months. When I consider buying one, what model would you recommend, since you are the owner of one?
Hehe, actually the portraits I did I all created while standing, but I guess it makes sense too to be sitting while doing them And you're welcome about the fur-sketches, good luck on them ^^ Of course, you can always go for your own style whereever you see it fit, that's just the way I draw fur, which might or might not be a good way to do it .. only time will show
I'd say tablets pay off if your traditional drawings are a lot more dynamic and vivid than your digital drawings, where the mouse would limit you in how curved and "spontaneous" you can make the lines look. Where you can achieve a lot of things you do with the tablet with the mouse as well, with the tablet it's faster and more "natural" than pushing the mouse and hoping for the lines to turn out smooth and non-edgy (since with the tablet, you'd be holding a pen and draw just like on paper. Also, the lines change depending on how hard you press with the pen, from a really thin and faint to an all bold line).
Wacom tablets (such as the Graphire3) are pretty much the best you can get, depending on whether you usually draw in small strokes or larger ones, you'd either go for an A6 or an A5 tablet - the best is, if you can just try it out somehow. There are other tablets such as from Aiptek that are a lot cheaper and do their job too (they're tablet after all), but the pen of Wacom tablets is lighter and feels better too, in my opinion (on my aiptek tablet, the pen tip slightly gave way if you pressed harder, which felt weird - no pencil would do that). But yeah, a tablet is definitely not a must, it can make everything a lot easier, but to practice and to improve, drawing and practicing traditionally (which I'd suggest to do) works wonderfully too (so if you get better traditionally, you get better on the tablet too, even if you didn't draw on it yet, while from drawing with the mouse you don't really improve on anything but drawing with the mouse) ^^
Heheh, awesome! You finished it up! ^_^ It's amazing, you've come such a long way in terms of skill with your coloring since you first started. And of course you're getting much better with your lineart, you're going to be an awesome artist someday XD
I really enjoy how you took each of the original artists' styles and tied them all together with your own, it seems to make them all fit together in that picture even though they're all really different in design. The coloring is the best I've seen from you (I keep saying this, doesnt that tell you something? X3 You really are getting better!) and it works with the background too...I wonder where you got the photos from? Did you take them yourself?
I think out of all of them, Kazzi looks the best, not to say that the others aren't well done (cuz they are x3), and I really like Nishi's expression too (what am I doing here? XD)
This is an awesome picture Bungie, I'm sad that I only got around to commenting on it now Keep on improving, I'm telling you, you're going to be awesome someday ^_~
You think? Well, now that I look back at this, I guess it's true...Whoa, I really should make a better version of that someday!
I actually couldn't get Tobias to look quite right, don't know why. I drew him many times trying to get a decent look. Maybe adding a sclera to his eyes might give another interesting look?
And you don't have to apologize. It should be I who should be doing that because I haven't been commenting much on pictures lately. Many thanks on your encouraging words.
Hey, it's Kazzi!! o.o I'd never seen this before, I was just browsing through your gallery when I was like 'wait is that me? o.o' Thanks, makes a nice unexpected surprise. n_____n
Hehe, shopping is what Kazzi does best. Poor Toby and Nishi, they're going to have to cary all her bags back. -evil-
I love the backround, was that done by photomanipulation? However you did it, it looks great. n_____n
